Soothing Blues of Summer

I was asked to be a guest blogger at Artistcellar recently and was given 2 stencils to use to create some art.  The 2 Artistcellar Stencils I played with are Reims in the Cathedral series and Ripples in the Water series.  I want to show you a couple of different ways to use the stencils on Yupo Paper using Alcohol Inks, Viva Décor Inka Gold, Liquid Pearl & other supplies.

Reims supplies
White Yupo Paper
Ranger Adirondack Alcohol Ink in Pool, Purple Twilight, Aqua, Sailboat Blue, Stream & Bottle
Adirondack Alcohol Blending Solution
Viva Décor Inka Gold in Cobalt Blue and Steel Blue
Spectrum Noir markers in BT5, BT4, BT7, TB3 and the Blender marker
Ranger Liquid Pearls in White Opal and Royal Blue

I first started by dropping a light color background of inks on the Yupo paper with the blending solution.  I used a piece of felt and smeared it around to give it a mottled look.

Lay the stencil over the Yupo paper and apply Viva Inka Gold with your finger or part of an old T-Shirt.  T-shirts are nice and soft and don’t leave fuzz behind.  Periodically lift the stencil to make sure you have covered the whole piece with the Inka Gold colors.  I like to use both colors blending them together.

Next I dropped more alcohol inks on the Inka Gold and painted some areas to add more depth.  I highlighted it with the markers.  To add shadow I used the deep purple marker on some of the edges.  If you go into the light part of the design where you stenciled, simply use the blender pen to lift off the ink.

Finish off the piece with some dots of Liquid Pearls.  I wish I could have captured the shine better because it is so beautiful in person.

Have fun with this.

I couldn’t stop with just one stencil, so I played with the Ripples stencil to give you a whole different look and technique.

Ripples supplies
White Yupo Paper
Ranger Adirondack alcohol ink in Pool, Aqua & Sailboat blue
Adirondack Alcohol Blending Solution
Grumbacher Misket Liquid Frisket for Masking
Micron Marker

Trace your stencil onto the Yupo Paper using a pencil.  Mask the areas you want to keep a crisp white with the Misket fluid.  Let dry completely before you drop in the alcohol inks.

Drop in the alcohol inks in random splashes all over the Yupo Paper along with some blending solution.  Move the paper around to let the alcohol inks play around together.  The inks dry very quickly, so add enough ink to get it to cover the paper.

When the inks are completely dry, peel away the masking fluid with your finger.  To make the edges crisp and give more depth, use a Micron marker and define the top edge of each water line.

Have fun with these.  The fun part of working with Alcohol Inks on Yupo Paper is they have a mind of their own and create their own look.  You have more control adding the inks on top of the Inka Gold as in the top piece of art.

Enjoy!

Alcohol Inks on Yupo Paper

Happy Easter Everyone!  I'm exploring once again some new art materials.

These are created using alcohol inks on Yupo Paper.

It is fun to see the imagery you can create because you have no control over what the inks want to do.  It is amazing what can be created using only 3-4 colors.

These are my landscapes, and soon I will post my abstracts.
This type of art is so much fun to create and the color is amazing in person.

Have a great weekend and try something new.  It is so rewarding.

Almond Muffins

I have created a fun piece of art to bring everyone some brightness & to cheer up my kitchen.  This is part of the "When Artists Cook" Series.  I have had an interesting couple of months around my food intake causing me to be even more creative in the kitchen with limited ingredients.  I found out that I have very high cholesterol, even if the only foods I am eating with lots of cholesterol are butter & eggs.  I am the last person I would think of who would need to be watchful for this elevation.  Since Thanksgiving I have cut out butter from my recipes.

Last month I had a severe reaction to fructose that created a lot of havoc in my system.  Thank goodness the medical staff in the ER were able to get my reaction & severe stomach/ intestinal spasms under control.  This has left me only being able to eat chicken broth, white rice, and rice noodles for the past several weeks.  I’m slowly adding chicken, fish, potatoes, and this muffin… back into my diet.  One day soon I hope to find a way for my body to accept more foods.  If anyone has any suggestions for food intolerances & food allergies, please email me.  After an eventful start of the year, I am ready to play in the kitchen again.

This piece of art is on Yupo paper, which is made of plastic.  I love color and whimsical themes and since Yupo paper has its own character, it is fun to see what emerges.  I used Twinkling H2O’s and ink on the surface.  The colors and shine pop.

This is my version of a muffin loaded with joy.  I have had this image in my mind for years to paint, but it wasn’t until I started playing on Yupo that I knew this was the time to paint it.

I found this muffin on Dianne’s blog www.deliciousasitlooks.com  & adapted it a titch since I am not able to have canola oil or lemon.  Thanks Dianne!  They are gluten free, fructose free friendly, dairy and soy free and easy to digest.  They stay nice and moist too.  The sauce is great for these muffins, waffles, tarts, and more.  I pretend it’s my jelly by thickening it a bit more.

Cheery Flowers on Yupo Paper

11x14, Watercolor & Ink on Yupo Paper (c) 2013 Colleayn Klaibourne

I created this piece of art to bring cheeriness to a long Minnesota winter.  You have probably noticed that each blog has a very different look to my art.  It has been suggested to me that I have one "style" so people would know my work.  I have tried for years to do this, but I have decided that I am going to be an artist with many styles.  The common denominator is color!    It is how my mind works, how my art emerges, and what keeps me excited about creating.

My goal this year has been to loosen up my work, and Yupo paper does that.  This is created using Twinkling H2O watercolors & Ink on Yupo Paper, which is 100% recyclable and made from polypropylene.  When you paint on it, it has a mind of its own.  You really don't know what is going to emerge.  It is non-absorbent so the paints remain bright and happy.  It is perfect for my love of creating vibrant, colorful art.

You’ll still see the detail of my Celtic Art, Mandalas, and flowers, and I’ll keep it fun with whimsical art, Angels & Faeries, and more.
Enjoy!
